In some traditions, a true name was understood as part of a person’s essence, a thread linking the body, memory, fate and shadow. Certain names were whispered only at birth, initiation or another passage into a new life.
Nomen est vinculum. A name is a bond.
The name we receive
A name gathers memories of the voices that have spoken it. In symbolic practice, writing a name focuses attention on a person and an intention. That person retains their own will.
The name we choose
A hidden name can mark a new path, protect something personal or help us recognise our shadow. Naming a fear gives it shape. Naming a boundary helps us recognise when it is crossed.
