Ritual Candles and Colour Symbolism

Ritual Candles and Colour Symbolism illustration 1

Candles in ritual and the symbolism of colour

A candle can mark the beginning and end of a ritual. The flame may represent focus, transformation or sustaining an intention. Colour associations depend on the tradition and the purpose of the ritual.

  • White. Cleansing, calm and new beginnings. In some practices it can take the place of other colours.
  • Black. Protection, closing a chapter or cutting ties with what no longer serves you.
  • Red. Passion, courage, strength and vitality.
  • Pink. Tenderness, kindness, closeness and care.
  • Green. Growth, balance, nature and prosperity.
  • Blue. Calm, honesty, reflection and clear communication.
  • Purple. Intuition, change and spiritual reflection.
  • Yellow. Creativity, learning, concentration and confidence.
  • Brown. Stability, patience and a connection with everyday life.

Choose a colour that fits your intention and the ritual. One candle may be enough to create a moment of focus. Place it on a stable, heat-resistant holder away from herbs, paper, hair and fabric. Never leave a flame unattended.
