Symbolism, use and preparation
Ritual oils can be part of preparing for a ceremony. Their scent, ingredients and use help set the atmosphere and remind you of the intention you bring to the practice. Their meanings vary by tradition. They do not guarantee an outcome.
How do you choose an oil?
Choose according to the symbolism of the ingredients and the purpose of the practice. Esoteric traditions often associate rose with tenderness and love, lavender with calm and harmony, rosemary with cleansing and focus, basil with prosperity, and sage with protection and cleansing.
You can place a closed bottle on the table as a symbol or use a fragrance oil intended to scent a room. Follow the tradition and your own associations, and check the ingredients and manufacturer’s instructions first.
How to prepare a blend for fragrance
Use only ingredients intended for that purpose. Combine a carrier oil and a ready-made fragrance composition according to the label, then transfer the blend to a clean, dry, tightly closed bottle. Label it with the ingredients and preparation date. Store it away from light, heat and children.
Do not make a skin blend without appropriate knowledge of dilution and ingredient safety. Essential oils are concentrated and can cause irritation or an allergic reaction. Do not apply them undiluted, swallow them, add them to a flame or use them on a candle unless the manufacturer explicitly recommends it. Consider pets and people sensitive to fragrances.
Record the ingredients, manufacturer’s proportions, date, scent and traditional associations in your grimoire. Keep what you learned from sources separate from your own observations.
