What should you prepare for a ritual?
Begin with a moment of focus and a clear intention. The things you choose can set the atmosphere and give your actions symbolic meaning. Their selection depends on the ceremony and the tradition you draw from.
Candle
A flame can represent focus, change or sustaining an intention. Lighting a candle can mark the start of a quiet practice. Its colour may matter in your chosen tradition. Select a suitable candle and use a stable heat-resistant holder, away from fabrics, paper and herbs. Put out the flame before leaving.
Ritual Candles and Colour Symbolism
Herbs
Plants are associated with cleansing, protection, peace or renewal. Choose a plant you can identify and use safely. You can place dried herbs in a small dish away from the flame. Some herbs are unsuitable for burning, ingestion or skin contact. Take special care around children, pets and people sensitive to fragrances.
Oil
Choose oil for its scent, ingredients or symbolism. Some traditions anoint objects. Others place a closed bottle in the prepared space. Check the product’s intended use. Concentrated essential oils can irritate skin. Keep them away from flames and follow the manufacturer’s storage and use instructions.
Ritual Oils: Meaning and Practice
Grimoire or notebook
Use a book to record intentions, materials, the sequence of your practice and your reflections. A plain notebook will do. Date your entries, distinguish observations from material drawn from sources and respect other people’s privacy.
A safe place
A clear table and a few appropriate items are enough. Check the candle’s base, ventilation and the space around the flame. Move herbs, paper and books away from the fire. Set everything within reach and give yourself a quiet moment to name your intention.
How to choose your materials
Begin with things whose meaning you understand. A candle, a notebook and a quiet place may be enough. Add other items when you know what you want them to do in your practice. I am still writing my larger book of spells, where I explain the symbolism and use of materials. In the meantime, explore the subject, record your sources and remember that meanings differ between traditions.
